The Book Industry number classification system is a popular alternative to the more well known Dewey Decimal number classification system. The group which developed the coding is mostly composed of North American booksellers, and just as in other common classifications systems (such as with DDS), the group injected its own biases. Three areas where you particularly see these quirks is in a) a noticable focus on separately categorizing Christian subjects, b) using a separate classification when there is a Media Tie-In, and c) asigning most Juvenile works into an entire separated duplication of Adult subject areas.

To classify under BISAC, the classifier first chooses a Subject/Category term that most closely describes the publication. Syntax used for naming is 1- the "Subject Heading" (all in caps), followed by 2- a space-slash-space, and then 3- the "Category" (plus any aditional subcategory) area. Example = "SCIENCE / Astronomy".

Associated with each classification Name will then be found the actual Book Industry classification Code, which uses a syntax of a three letter Subject indicator followed, by a three digit Classification indicator (originally categorically unique), and then a three digit Sub-Classification indicator (typically "000", which originally stood for general). Example = "SCI004000".
